TORQUE CONVERTER
It increases the value of torque up to three times. Thus it serves the purpose of gear box which provides higher torque at starting (at low gear) so it is used in the place of gear box.


CONSTRUCTION
Mainly it consists three components:
1.    Impeller (driving member)
2.    Turbine (driven member)
3.    Stator (fixed member)
The impeller is connected with input shaft. The turbine is connected with output shaft. The stator is fixed member and is mounted on the frame. The complete unit is filled with mineral oil which works as the power transferring media.


WORKING
When the input shaft start to rotate, the oil in impeller thrown out side due to centrifugal force. The oil having kinetic energy will falls on turbine blades and forces them to rotate. When a certain level of pressure on turbine blades is reached, it starts to rotate and vehicle starts moving. The fluid leaves the turbine blade in backward direction. Now the direction of fluid is controlled by stator So that the fluid may strike the impeller in forward direction. Again the impeller throws the fluid into the turbine. This goes on repeatedly. Because of thus torque of the turbine increased. Hence we get higher torque at output shaft.
