CLUTCH
It is a system which transmit rotary motion of one shaft to the another shaft when it is needed.
1.    The driving unit which is attached to the engine and rotate with it.
2.    The driven unit which is attached to the transmission and rotates it.
3.    The operating unit which engages and disengages the driving and driven members.
Working principle of clutch:
suppose there are two discs. Initially disc ‘A’ is was rotating at the speed of N r.p.m and disc B was stationary. Now if the lord W is applied on the disc B to engage it with disc A, the force of friction come in between them and disc B starts rotating. The clutch also follows the same principle.
The torque transmitted
T = µWR
µ  =  coefficient of friction                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     w = axial load                                                                                                                                                                                 R = effective mean radius of friction clutch.

MULTIPLATE CLUTCH;

multiplate clutch consists of more than one clutch plates. As there are many clutch plates, friction area is increased and hence the capacity of clutch is also increased. So the clutch can transmits more torque.
WORKING;

The outer teeth plates rotate with the fly wheel. In the engaged position the spring pressure causes to push the pressure plate on the clutch plates and the inner plates come in contact with outer plates and rotate. The power is transmitted to the gear box shaft. When the clutch paddle is pressed, it pulls back the pressure plate and the inner plate are released hence the clutch is disengaged. When the lord from the clutch paddle is removed, the spring pressure again comes into play and the clutch is engaged.

ADVANTAGES:
1. Due to more friction area the clutch can transmits more torque.                                                              2. Size of clutch reduced for the same torque.                                                                                                   3. Heat dissipation is easier as there are many surfaces to dissipate the heat.
