FUNCTION OF DIFFERENTIAL


It transmits power at right angle.
It helps the vehicle to take a turn smoothly by reducing the speed of inner wheel and increase the speed of outer wheel.
PRINCIPLE OF WORKING


It works on the principle that when two bevel gears are mashed with bevel at right angel, then                                                            the two gears will rotate in opposite direction at same speed

Gear A is mashed with gear B and C when gear A rotates at N rpm in clock wise direction then gear B and C also stars rotates , but the direction of motion is apposite to gear A.

CONSTRUCTION:


There is a bevel pinion which is attached to propeller shaft through universal joint to the bevel pinion which is mashed to crown wheel which rotates freely on axle shaft. A cage is fixed with the crown wheel. There is two (or four) planet pinion attached to the cage, which rotates free on the cage spindles. To the planet pinion are attached to two sun gears on each on the axle shaft left and right.
WORKING OF DIFFERENTIAL


When the vehicle is going straight, the whole of the arrangement works as a unit the power flows from bevel pinion to crown wheel, to cage, to planet pinion and to sun gears which rotates the axle shaft. The power is equally divided between the sun gears and there speed is equal. Now, if vehicle has to take turn to words right then the wheel of the right side will tend to reduce its speed. By this why speed of right axle shaft will reduce. Simultaneously, the speed of left axle will increase. So the vehicle will turn smoothly without any skid.
